Operation Impact is a national campaign to make Canada’s roads the safest in the world. This special police initiative will begin on October 9th and conclude on October 12th, 2009. The project is designed to remind people that an essential part of the enforcement job is to save lives and reduce injuries on our roadways.

The focus of this initiative will be on the behaviours that put drivers, passengers and other road users at risk: impaired driving, seat belt use, and all aspects related to aggressive driving. All enforcement agencies across the country have been invited to participate.

Project Impact is designed to remind motorists that they literally hold the key to achieving significantly safer streets and highways.

“Every driver can help do their part to reduce serious injury or death on our roadways with a few simple steps,” says Chief Gary Crowell. “It’s as easy as buckling up, slowing down, eliminating driver distractions and not drinking and driving. It really starts with them, when they put the key in the ignition.”
This initiative has been strategically chosen, as it is significant long weekend. More people are traveling and traffic crashes are more frequent.

In the Halton Region there have been 6 collisions over the course of 2009 that has claimed 7 lives. This number is down from the same time in 2008 which had seen 12 deaths by this time. These are just numbers but they represent moms, dads, sisters, brothers, loved ones, co-workers and neighbours. The Halton Regional Police Service will continue to bring the death toll on our road ways to zero.
Operation Impact is sponsored by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) and Transport Canada and is part of Road Safety Vision 2010, which has a goal of making Canada’s roads the safest in the world by 2010.
