The Office of the Fire Marshal is notifying the public that on March 10, 2009, Maytag Corporation announced a voluntary recall of various refrigerator models. An electrical failure in the relay, which is the component that turns on the refrigerator’s compressor, can cause overheating and pose a serious fire hazard.
Approximately 65,000 units in Ontario are affected as well as 193,500 throughout Canada. The refrigerators were sold between January 2001 and 2004 by department/appliance stores and various homebuilders.
Two non-injury incidents were reported in Canada. Outside of Canada, Maytag received 41 reports of refrigerator relay ignition, including 16 reports of property damage ranging from smoke damage to extensive kitchen damage.
The recall involves certain Maytag, Jenn-Air, Amana, Admiral, Magic Chef, Performa by Maytag and Crosley brand side-by-side and top-freezer refrigerators that were made in the U.S.A.
Note: Refrigerators with freezers on the bottom are not affected by this recall. Consumers who have one of the recalled Maytag models or who are unsure whether their Maytag refrigerator is one of the recalled models should immediately call Maytag at 1 866 533-9817 (toll free) to obtain more information.
