At the last Council meeting of this term of Council, retiring Councillors Fred Oliver and Barry Lee were recognized for their many years of tireless dedication and commitment to the taxpayers of Halton.

Fred Oliver served as a Councillor for Halton Region for 25 years and also served as the Police Chief of the Township of Trafalgar, Town of Oakville and Deputy Police Chief for Halton Region. Fred has dedicated his life to bettering his community. In recognition of his contributions, particularly in areas of public safety, Halton Region is offering The Fred Oliver Scholarship for Policing Excellence, an annual scholarship to encourage students to pursue the field of policing with the Halton Regional Police Service. The scholarship will be awarded to the cadet who is employed with the Halton Regional Police, and who graduates from the Ontario Police College with the highest marks.

Barry Lee has served as a valuable Councillor for Halton Region for 19 years and has been a strong voice in support of rural and agricultural activities across the Region. In recognition of this dedication to the agricultural community, Halton Region is offering The Barry Lee Scholarship for Agricultural Excellence, an annual scholarship to encourage students studying in disciplines related to agriculture. This scholarship is intended to foster the appreciation of the Agricultural industry and to get students engaged in becoming active participants in the agricultural business within Halton Region to keep the agricultural business vibrant and alive.

“Both Fred and Barry have made significant contributions to the Halton community, throughout their years of service,” said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. “These scholarships will ensure that their efforts of fostering appreciation for both the agricultural and policing community continue with the generations to come.”
