Risk Watch has arrived and is taking over schools in Halton Hills. David Ford, Captain of Public Education says, “Our efforts of having all our Halton Hills elementary schools “Risk Watch” active has finally come to fruition”. Ford says, “Successful discussions with the Halton District School Board have been finalized with an immediate commitment to incorporate the Risk Watch curriculum into the schools of Acton and Georgetown”. First starting off with three elementary public schools as pilots for the program, the value of this program was quickly realized and the expansion into the remaining schools began.

An injury prevention program for children pre-kindergarten to grade eight, Risk Watch is now active in nineteen elementary schools in Acton and Georgetown. In addition to promoting safe decision making, Risk Watch teaches children to analyze situations and weigh the consequences and helps them beat the odds against what is often termed preventable and predictable injuries. Ford also says, “Having a background of Risk Watch also instills positive values and healthy self-esteem in our children starting at a very young age”.

Coming together with the 5 Catholic Elementary Schools and Halton Hills Christian School, Risk Watch has the potential to reach in access of 8,000 elementary school aged children. Ford says, “The ripple effect to parents and siblings will be tremendous”, adding, “Our children will truly be the benefactors of this outstanding educational tool”.

Captain Ford has invited a Representative from the Office of the Fire Marshal to co-host a Risk Watch familiarization workshop at the Churchill Road Fire Station in Acton the afternoon of Tuesday October 27, 2009. The workshop is intended for all the new HDSB Teacher Representatives and all HDCSB Teachers.

Risk Watch is an injury prevention program developed and implemented for children pre-kindergarten through grade eight. The program was developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and endorsed by the Fire Marshals’ Public Fire Safety Council.
