On Sunday, March 6 from 1 – 4 p.m., the Halton Region Museum, located in Kelso Conservation Area, will celebrate International Women’s Day with topical speakers, presentations, entertainment and light snacks.
International Women’s Day (IWD) was first declared in 1910 and the first International Women’s Day event was held in 1911. “The International Women’s Day Centenary coincides with Halton Region Museum’s 50th anniversary,” said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. “I invite everyone to join in the celebration – of a proud past, an inspired present, and a fabulous future.”
Guests of the second annual celebration named “Women Through the Ages—Footprints of the Past 50 Years” will enjoy two presentations. Author and millinery specialist Norma Shephard will start the afternoon’s celebrations at 1 p.m. As founder and director of the Mobile Millinery Museum, Norma will present Shoe and Tell, a one hour program focusing on the history of women’s footwear. Guests will be able to view first hand, a unique collection and display of vintage women’s shoes.
Following Norma’s presentation, at 2:15 p.m., Milton’s well-known sculptor and artist Nancy Cuttle will share her journey and perspective of the history of women through interesting stories and art. Ms. Cuttle has been communicating through her works of art, including painting, drawing and sculpting, for almost three decades. She has won numerous awards in premier Juried Exhibitions in the Greater Toronto Area.
“We are very pleased to welcome Norma Shephard and Nancy Cuttle back to help us celebrate this milestone,” said Nancy Field, Manager, Heritage Services.
Delicate sandwiches, decadent pastries and a selection of teas and refreshments will be on offer during the afternoon’s activities. From 3 until 4 p.m. the Flute Ensemble from the Burlington Concert Band will perform and visitors will have the opportunity to tour the Museum.
Additionally, guests of the day will be encouraged to take a tour of the Museum’s artifacts collection featuring a special “Blue Monday” display. Prior to the turn of the century, laundry day was known as “Blue Monday.” The term refers to the bluing agent used in rinse water and the drudgery involved in the washing process.
Tickets for the Museum’s International Women’s Day celebration are $20 in advance, with a limited number of tickets available at the door for $25.
