(NC) – Once the summer hits, it’s time to dust off the barbecue and begin grilling! If you’re a novice on the barbecue take a look at the tips below for perfect grilling every time.

Tip #1 Ever wonder how to serve barbecued meats with classic criss-cross grill marks? It’s simple! Take a look at your meat, and decide which side looks best. Place this “best” side on the heated grill. Now…leave it!

Don’t make the common mistake of turning the meat too quickly, as this will cause it to stick and tear.

Instead, leave the food on the heated grill long enough for it to “release” itself. When the meat comes easily off the grill it’s ready! To create criss-cross grill marks, rotate it 90 degrees prior to turning it over. Voila!

Tip #2 Never pierce or score your hot dogs before putting them on the barbecue it lets all of the juices out creating a dry hot dog.

Tip #3 Always lightly oil the grill side of your meat before placing it on the hot barbecue. Just before you are about to flip oil the other side. This will ensure your meat never sticks to the grill!

Tip #4 Though it’s tempting, don’t press down on your meat while grilling! It allows all of the juices to escape making your meat dry.

If you are looking for a new twist or a more grown-up taste than classic hot dog toppings for your next cottage weekend or barbecue, see below. For each recipe, start with a barbecued Maple Leaf Top Dog:
