On Wednesday, February 3, 2010, the John Elliot Theatre in Georgetown will host two performances of “The Spirit of Harriet Tubman.” This compelling one-woman show tells the story of Tubman’s flight from slavery and her involvement in the Underground Railroad. Performances are at 10 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for the general public and may be purchased by calling the Halton Region Museum at 905-875-2200, ext. 21.

“This memorable performance, presented by the Halton Museum Foundation, both inspires and informs,” said Gary Carr, Halton Regional Chair. “Through exceptional storytelling and song, award-winning actress Leslie McCurdy brings to life an important part of North American history.”

Harriet Tubman, born Araminta Ross, had a very strong spirit. Born into slavery in Maryland, she not only successfully escaped slavery, she returned to the south 19 times to lead more than 300 other slaves to freedom. Using only her voice and a trunk full of costumes, McCurdy shares the journey of Harriet Tubman’s life, from her early years as a slave, her involvement in the Underground Railroad and the Civil War, to her later years as a tireless worker for social justice.

“The Spirit of Harriet Tubman” demonstrates what people can do when they work together,” said Nancy Field, Halton’s Manager of Heritage Services. “In all of her journeys, thanks to her courage and determination, Harriet “never lost a single passenger”. After her own escape, she began relocating members of her family to St. Catharines, which remained her base of operations until 1857.”

Leslie McCurdy both wrote and performs this inspiring story for audiences young and old across North America. A gifted playwright and actress, Leslie McCurdy is represented by Prologue to the Performing Arts, a charitable organization dedicated to bringing the performing arts to young people. This performance is geared towards students and teachers grade six and up, however a limited number of tickets are available for the general public.

“The Spirit of Harriet Tubman” is one of several fundraising events held throughout the year by the Halton Museum Foundation. The Foundation supports the Museum in promoting quality education programs and raises funds for capital projects. The Foundation is grateful to the Best Western Inn on the Hill for their continued support of this event.
