On March 28, 2008, the Honourable David Caplan, Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal announced that The Corporation of the Town of Halton Hills had been awarded a one time grant of $1,900,000 from the Municipal Infrastructure Investment Initiative Program (MIII), to be used for the reconstruction of the Maple Avenue Fire Station.
In early January 2008 The Province of Ontario announced the MIII Program as a $300 million one-time grant funding that was to support investments in local infrastructure priorities. The objective of the program is to direct new infrastructure funding to support the construction or renewal of municipally owned infrastructure. The reconstruction of the Maple Avenue Fire Station being a construction ready, municipally owned infrastructure project met the prerequisites for the MIII Program application.
The current fire station at 53 Maple Avenue was built in 1967 as a Public Works garage and was converted to a fire station in the late 1970’s. The current building no longer satisfies the space need requirements and is in a state of disrepair. Tenders were recently received and Council will be dealing with the awarding of the contracts on April 7, 2008.
“Halton Hills firefighters have waited a long time to see the day the Maple Avenue fire station was replaced,” commented Fire Chief Brent Marshall. “The additional funding this Provincial grant provides closes a 17 year chapter to replace this building. Firefighters are extremely pleased with the support received from Council and The Province to advance this project. I would also like to thank the Mayor for his efforts in obtaining the grant.”
The MIII Grant covers approximately 50% of the construction cost of the Maple Avenue fire station and will have a positive financial impact on the Town.
Mayor Rick Bonnette is extremely excited of the news of this MIII award stating, “Halton Hills appreciates the funding from Minister Caplan. Funding like this is showing the government is very interested in assisting Municipalities like ours.”
Councillor Moya Johnson, Chair of the Fire Services and Emergency Planning Committee also welcomes the news of the award and adds “The MIII represents an excellent partnership program between the Town and the Province of Ontario that will benefit the community, environment and the economy. I look forward to moving to the ground breaking ceremonies”
