The Office of Sustainability, in collaboration with Halton Hills Public Library and Halton Hills Hydro, is making energy meters available for the public. The energy meters may be borrowed at:
- Town Hall, Planning, Development & Sustainability Department – 1 Halton Hills Drive, Georgetown
- Acton Branch of the Halton Hills Public Library – 17 River Street, Acton
- Georgetown Branch of the Halton Hills Public Library – 9 Church Street, Georgetown
The Energy Meters were generously provided by Halton Hills Hydro.
By measuring the amount of energy consumed and identifying appliances that consume the most energy, the energy meters will help residents answer the question: How much energy does this appliance use and what is the cost to run it?
Speaking about this initiative, Mayor Bonnette noted that:
“On the Town’s sustainability journey, making energy meters available to the public will help implement the Green Plan’s recommendations which focus on energy conservation.
This initiative demonstrates the need to act locally while thinking globally. It also continues to illustrate Council’s commitment to actions that meet the PAREE principle and, therefore, are Practical, Affordable, Reasonable, Enforceable and Educational.”
TIPS TO REDUCE ENERGY USE IN YOUR HOME
- Switch your standard inefficient incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs which use 75% less energy. Turn off unnecessary lights.
- Unplug appliances or turn them off at a power bar to reduce the phantom load. Phantom load is electricity consumed by electronic devices even when they are turned off. For example, a phantom load is caused by computers, monitors, phone chargers, TVs and coffeemakers with timers.
- Use your washing machine and dishwasher after 8 p.m. when electricity use is not at its peak.
