With the Unanimous support of Council, The Town of Halton Hills will join with other municipalities, businesses, organizations and individuals in Canada and around the world to participate in Earth Hour. At 8 pm March 29, the world will turn off its lights for just one hour—Earth Hour—to show it’s possible to take action on climate change.
Earth Hour alone will not reverse climate change; it is, however, a symbol that people working together can make a difference. Turning off our lights for just one hour is but a beginning step in working toward meaningful steps that will reduce energy use and therefore lead to a cleaner environment.
Last year the World Wildlife Federation in Australia pioneered Earth Hour with almost 2.3 million participants. It was a huge success! This year World Wildlife Federation- Canada originally partnered with the Toronto Star, City of Toronto and Virgin Mobile to bring Earth Hour to Canada. Other towns, cities, organizations and individuals in Canada are joining the Earth Hour movement. The Town of Halton Hills Council at its February 4th 2008 meeting endorsed the participation of Halton Hills.
The goal is to get as many people, businesses, and government involved in Earth Hour at 8 pm on March 29, 2008.
“One thing that we have learned from the public input that went into the Halton Hills Green Plan is that in many ways people are ahead of government in their concerns for environmental issues” states Mayor Rick Bonnette. “The Earth Hour is a way for people to say to the upper levels of government —we care about our environment and we care about climate change. It is an opportunity for citizens to pull together with the Town and with environmental organizations.”
Over the next few weeks, information will be posted on the Town web site and in newspapers on how citizens, organization and businesses in Halton Hills can participate in Earth Hour.
Remember to do your part to show that we in Halton Hills care about the dangers of climate change: Participate in Earth Hour at 8:00 pm on March 29, 2008. Turn off your lights and electronic equipment for one hour.
