A grant of $90,013.00 has been awarded to the Town for development of the Hungry Hollow Boardwalk and related trail fixtures such as benches and interpretive signage. The boardwalk will be located on the north side of Silver Creek just east of Mountainview Road and will link two sections of existing trails. Per the terms of the grant, work is to be started this month and substantially complete by March 2010.
“I’m pleased that our project submitted to the National Trails Coalition under the 2009 – 2010 National Trails Infrastructure Program has been approved for funding” noted Mayor Rick Bonnette. “We have developed some great trails in the Hungry Hollow ravine and this funding will make another section a reality.”
The criteria for the grant focused on trail development and management expertise which the Town was able to demonstrate through the environmental strategy contained within the Hungry Hollow Management Plan. “I feel that our recognition awards from Credit Valley Conservation and Parks and Recreation Ontario, as well as our on-going role in health promotion and community partnerships made us a prime candidate for this program” said Recreation and Parks Director Terry Alyman. “We’re pleased the Ontario Trails Council supported our works to date and stood behind our proposal that was viewed at the national level.”
Five hundred shovel ready trail projects across Canada were approved for funding, with works scheduled for completion in March 2010. The Town’s grant supplements works already approved in the 2009 Capital Budget and Credit Valley Conservation trail permits, with works being undertaken by local contractor Grade Control Limited of Glen Williams.
