Halton Region Museum is opening its doors once again for the annual Heritage Day open house on Sunday, February 15, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. This year, visitors will be treated to two special events: a presentation on Acton’s Beardmore Tannery and the launch of the Museum’s new Visitor Centre Art Gallery.

“I encourage everyone to visit the Halton Region Museum on February 15 to explore our past and learn about a distinctive piece of Halton’s heritage – Acton’s Beardmore Tannery,” said Gary Carr, Halton’s Regional Chair. “In addition, the museum will be welcoming visitors into the brand new Art Gallery which will feature the collections of renowned Halton artists.”

J. Mark Rowe, a well known local historian and author will illustrate Acton’s leathertown history and explore the company that generated its leather producing reputation. In addition, Rosemary Simpson, a local artist from the Village of Lowville will be on hand to showcase her “Escarpment Moods” collection, the first in a series of artistic collections to be featured at the Museum’s Visitor Centre. View Rosemary’s work online at www.studiosimpson.com.

Heritage Day was first established in 1973 by the Heritage Canada Foundation to encourage the preservation and promotion of Canada’s nationally significant historic, architectural, natural, and scenic heritage. Celebrations last for the week following Heritage Day. There is no charge to attend Halton Region Museum’s Heritage Day celebrations, and parking is also free. The presentation at 2:00 p.m. will be followed by a Museum tour at 3:00 p.m. and then the Art Gallery opening including hors d’oeuvres and refreshments from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.

The Halton Region Museum is located inside Kelso Conservation Area in Milton at the base of the Glen Eden Ski Hills. For more information on the Heritage Day Celebration, please contact the Museum at 905-875-2200, toll free 1-866-442-5866 or visit www.halton.ca/museum.
