Warmer weather doesn’t mean leave your windows and doors unlocked

With the summer months upon us, the Region of Halton and in particular, Burlington, continue to see an increase in the number of residential break and enters. The Halton Regional Police service encourages you to follow some important guidelines to help prevent these crimes of opportunity.

  1. During the evening hours make sure your windows and doors are locked, this includes your patio door and screen.
  2. During the daytime hours, residents who work in their gardens are asked to keep their garage doors closed and locked along with any doors not being used or in sight.
  3. Store any large amounts of currency or valuable jewellery in a safe hidden location
  4. Family heirlooms should be stored in a safety deposit box
  5. Ensure that your home doesn’t show obvious signs of being unoccupied, such as uncollected newspapers or mail
  6. Maintain an up to date list of all valuable electronic equipment including make, model and serial numbers
  7. Don’t leave any valuables, especially car keys in plain view from the outside of your home.

For additional crime prevention tips residents are encouraged to visit the Halton Regional Police website. The Safety and Security Tips can be found under the Community Policing tab on the home page. Residents without access to the internet can contact their nearest police division within Halton Region and ask to speak to the Community Support Officer.

The Halton Regional Police Service would like to ask residents to be diligent in looking for any suspicious people and or vehicles in their neighbourhood.

If you observe anything that you feel might be of a suspicious nature in relation to these incidents, please contact the police at (905) 878-5511. If it is an emergency situation, including a crime in progress, use the 911 emergency telephone system to contact police.
