The Halton Region Health Department will be hosting Well Water Information Sessions on September 30 and October 6, 2009 for residents who get their drinking water from private wells. The September 30 session will be held at the Dufferin Community Centre on the Acton Fair Grounds, 30 Park Avenue, Acton and the October 6 session will be held at the Campbellville Fire Station, 2665 Reid Side Road, Milton. Both sessions run from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Industry specialists will deliver presentations on wells and septic systems. Presenters and public health inspectors will be available to answer questions during the evening.
“Testing your well water is a simple and easy way to monitor the quality of your water,” stated Gary Carr, Halton Region Chair. “These sessions can help well owners learn ways to protect, maintain and if needed, improve their water quality.”
Participants are encouraged to drop off water samples for bacteriological testing and nitrate testing. Bacteriological samples must be submitted in an approved sample bottle available from the Health Department and all of the well water depots. Nitrate samples must be submitted in a clean jar.
“Private wells can become contaminated with bacteria so it’s important to regularly test and maintain your well,” said Dr. Bob Nosal, Medical Officer of Health for Halton Region. “The Well Water Information Sessions are great opportunities for Halton residents to learn about well water safety through discussions with Health Department staff and well industry professionals.”
