Winners of 2011 Regional Chair's Environmental Awards inspire change and a greener Halton

2011 Environmental Leadership Award winner Jessica Tarka, student from Christ the King Catholic Secondary School in Georgetown, Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr, Geoff Green, founder and Executive Director of Students on Ice Expeditions

The winners of the Regional Chair’s Environmental Awards were announced at a special breakfast event earlier today that inspired those in attendance to make a difference in their community and across the world. Approximately 400 people attended the Halton Regional Chair’s Breakfast on the Environment at the Burlington Convention Centre which featured Canadian adventurer, environmentalist and educator Geoff Green as the keynote speaker. Jessica Tarka from Christ the King Catholic Secondary School in Georgetown was the first recipient of the Halton Environment Leadership Award. Seven students received Scholarship Awards and 18 young people and student clubs received Environmental Excellence Awards.

“I am inspired by all the wonderful and innovative contributions these student are making to the environment, “said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr as he welcomed students, business leaders and community leaders to the event. “I am also thankful to all the sponsors including our title sponsors Bell and TD Friends of the Environment for making this event possible.”

The Halton Environmental Leadership Award is a new award that recognizes a graduating high school student in Halton who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in their school or community. Jessica Tarka is the 2011 award winner. She received $2500 towards her post-secondary studies. Additionally, $500 will be donated in Jessica’s name to Save the Japan Dolphins Campaign. Jessica’s love of bidoversity has influenced her involvement with environmental initiatives in her school, community and on the international stage. Jessica has also been recognized as an Halton Environmental Scholarship winner in previous years and is again a recipient of the award in 2011.

The Halton Environmental Scholarship Awards were open to youth who are, or will be, pursuing post-secondary studies with an emphasis on the environment. Each Scholarship Award in this category is for $1,000. The Scholarship winners are:

The Halton Youth Awards for Environmental Excellence were open to all Halton elementary and secondary students, as well as grass roots organizations. This award provided students an opportunity to win $500 for their school or organization. This year’s winners are:

This year’s Breakfast on the Environment featured keynote speaker Geoff Green, founder and Executive Director of Students on Ice Expeditions. “I am thrilled to help celebrate these young environmental leaders in Halton Region,” said Geoff Green after hearing about the accomplishments of the youth being recognized at the awards breakfast. “They inspire me as much as I hope to further inspire them!” The Halton Environmental Awards Program helps to foster an appreciation for the environment in Halton’s youth and to raise awareness of local environmental initiatives. Each year local youth are joined at the awards breakfast by leaders from Halton’s business and non-profit sectors to celebrate the environmental achievements of local youth.
