Winners of the Halton Environmental Awards Program announced

The winners of the Halton Environmental Awards Program were announced before a sold-out crowd at a special event this morning. The Halton Regional Chair’s Breakfast on the Environment was held at the Burlington Convention Centre, and featured keynote speaker Justin Trudeau. Six students received Scholarship Awards, and 10 students and student clubs received Environmental Excellence Awards.

“The Environmental Awards Program was designed to celebrate youth who, through their schools and on their own, have taken steps towards making Halton a greener place,” said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. “I would like to congratulate all the award winners—your efforts today will help ensure a better environment for Halton tomorrow, and I encourage you to stay involved.”

The Halton Environmental Scholarship Awards were open to youth who are, or will be, pursuing post-secondary studies with an emphasis on the environment. Each Scholarship Award in this category is for $1,000.

The Halton Youth Awards for Environmental Excellence were open to all Halton elementary and secondary students and provided an opportunity to win $500 for their school. This year’s winners are:

This year’s Breakfast on the Environment featured keynote speaker Justin Trudeau. Mr. Trudeau’s presentation inspired youth to get involved with environmental projects or clubs and offered words of encouragement for everyone in the audience.

The Halton Environmental Awards Program helps to foster an appreciation for the environment in Halton’s youth and to raise awareness of local environmental initiatives. For more information on the awards, visit www.halton.ca.
