Halton’s third annual Waste Management calendar cover art contest will run from September 8 to October 15, 2010. Students from kindergarten to grade eight who live in or attend school in Halton Region are invited to submit their artwork for consideration. The art contest allows young residents to use their creativity to help raise awareness about the importance of the environment and Halton’s waste diversion programs.
“Last year’s art contest was a tremendous success and we received over 1000 colourful entries,” said Gary Carr, Halton’s Regional Chair. “The calendar cover art contest showcases the artistic talent of our young people and also demonstrates their commitment to the arts and to protecting our environment.”
Entries must follow this year’s theme of “My family recycles every day” and feature a Blue Box, GreenCart and a positive environment. Entrants are encouraged to be as creative, expressive, bold and colourful as they can and create artwork by hand. Acceptable materials for the contest include chalk, charcoal, collage, crayon, marker, paint and pencil. Contest details, entry forms and waste management images available for download can be found by visiting www.halton.ca/waste.
Four entrants will be selected (one from each Local Municipality) to have their artwork appear on the cover of the 2011 Waste Management Guide and Collection Calendar for their area, receive an environmental prize package, and have their picture sent to the local newspapers. All entries will be available for viewing at the Halton Regional Centre (1151 Bronte Rd., Oakville) during Waste Reduction Week, October 18-24, 2010.
Entries will once again be judged on overall suitability to the theme, originality and creativity by a panel of Regional staff, school board educators and professional arts managers. Submissions to the calendar cover art contest are due no later than 4:30 p.m. on Friday, October 15, 2010.
