The young winners of Halton’s third annual Waste Management calendar cover art contest were recognized at an event held the evening of January 11th at the Halton Regional Centre. This year, over 220 students from kindergarten to grade eight, who live in or attend school in Halton Region, submitted artwork for consideration. The art contest allows young residents to use their creativity to help raise awareness about the importance of the environment and Halton’s waste diversion programs.

“This year’s winners submitted very creative work,” said Gary Carr, Halton’s Regional Chair. “The calendar cover art contest is a great way to showcase the artistic talent of our young people and we are here to thank them for their hard work and to encourage further involvement in Halton’s environmental programs.”
The four winners are, Kaylie Mitchell of Burlington, Michael Matesic of Halton Hills, Hannah Zmigrodzki of Milton, and Sharon Zhang of Oakville.
This year’s entries followed the theme of “My family recycles every day” and were required to feature a Blue Box, GreenCart and a positive environment. Entries were judged on overall suitability to the theme, originality and creativity by a panel of Regional staff. The 2011 Waste Management Guide & Collection Calendar will be mailed to houses starting January 12, 2011.
This year’s Calendar also encourages residents to visit www.halton.ca/wastetools and use Halton’s online service request tools. The online service request tools are a convenient way for residents to order items like yard waste labels, and to report potentially missed Blue Box, GreenCart and garbage collection. The newest online tool allows residents to book metal and appliance collection for items including stoves, fridges, dishwashers, and freezers.
